Leucadendron Discolor is in the Proteaceae family and is common across much of South Africa. It can grow to 8 feet (2.4 meters) tall and 5 feet (1.5 meters) wide.

In the winter, a flower

In the winter, the tip of each branch becomes a flower. It is a bright red flower, hence its common name. This photo was taken in the late spring after the flowers had already bloomed and left.

The spring flower is black

In the spring the remains of the bright red flower could still be found. Here it remained as a black fuzzy ghost.

This plant was first imported into the UCSC Arboretum in 1994. It needs to be pruned, it decorative flowers cut during the winter, to keep the plant healthy and its growth under control.
