The trail began by running a short distance next to the road that led into the parking lot. It was as if the parking lot had to be built a half mile from the trail start, and extra trail had to be created leading up to its actual start.

The part of the trail that led from the parking lot to the actual trail start had to cross road intersections twice. Both times we had to wait for cars to pass before we could cross.

The Rules Governing The Trail

"No dogs or horses," but we encountered two dogs on the trail. The rest of the rules appeared to be obeyed during our visit. Of course bicycles would be impractical because of so many awkward stairways.

The trail was just narrow enough to require hikers to walk single file. This was still the pre-trail in advance of the actual trail.

The last intersection to be crossed on the way to the trail. Here, one road led up to a real estate development, the other down to the tail head.

The trail ran alongside the road. But the area next to the road was gravel next to a steep dropoff. As a consequence, most folks approached the trail head by walking on the road.

A set of signs marked the actual start of the Cascade Head Trail. Notice the small sign in the lower right that indicated the direction of the trail.

Here were other hikers walking on the road surface to approach the trail head. Note that trail begins with several sets of switch back stairways, which is why we could take this shot from above the road.

Only one deer was seen that day and it was seen crossing the roadway on the way back from the trail. The only wildlife seen on the trail itself were a half dozen small birds and a caterpillar.
